Clarice wanted to drive her home, but Tipsy insisted on taking an Uber. She didn’t want to create any opportunities for him to kiss her again. Not with her bed in close proximity.

As she watched Ben Sawyer Boulevard turn into Coleman Boulevard through the window of a beat up Kia, she wondered about Henry’s reaction should she invite a strange man into the house. They had a longstanding, unspoken agreement about privacy and she never worried about him spying on her. He was touchingly devoted to Jane in his weird way. The sibling affection between them felt as solid as her living bones, but that only added to her trepidation about hosting any one night stands at the house. Henry might take it as if someone were deflowering his sister. One of Tipsy’s paintings might fall off the wall onto the guy’s head.

One night stands, she thought. Has it come that?

Tipsy thought about her dating life since she left Ayers. She’d had a brief, intense romance with another well-known single guy, one not as rich as Clarice but better looking. When she thought back on the guy Shelby had dubbed St. Dave for his hypocritical professed dedication to a suspect set of Christian values, she wondered why she’d found him appealing. Dave was hot, but in retrospect, he wasn’t the brightest bulb and he was terribly conceited. Maybe just the newness of dating again after so many years with Ayers. She bit her lip to keep from giggling when she thought of Dave’s ineptitude in the romance department. She contrasted him with Clarice, who was nowhere near as buff or handsome, but was—she hated to admit it—sex on wheels. Everything about him was understated but powerful, from his careless clothes to his too deep voice to his gorgeous yet simple house. Even his honesty about what he wanted. She grudgingly respected him for it. Not many men would have the balls to lay it out there. If that’s truly what he wanted, it was ultimately better to tell it like it was than to lead someone on.

She hadn’t exactly been a nun dating between Dave and meeting Will, but she’d known better than to pee in her own pool, so to speak. She avoided the legions of single guys in their thirties and forties who lived in Mount Pleasant or on the surrounding islands. She’d purposely stayed below the gossip radar screens. Going to Capers with Clarice Andrews was definitely not flying below the radar. People were going to talk.

Tipsy didn’t want to be someone people talked about. She knew enough from Shelby’s escapades and the gossip she heard from friends. Everyone in Charleston intersected with everyone else in an incestuous circle of dating, marriage, affairs, and more dating. Lindsey had the right idea. Before she married P.D., she stuck to much younger men for her single lady conquests. No one other than her closest friends ever knew anything about it.

Great. Does this mean I’m back to fraternity parties?

Granna spoke up for the first time in a while.
